Patricia "Pat" Freeman

August 17, 1931 - April 21, 2022

After 90 wonderful years on earth, Patricia (Pat) Freeman died peacefully on April 21, 2022 with her granddaughter, Lindsay, at her side. Pat was born on August 17, 1931 in Evansville, Indiana to German immigrants who ran a working farm. She lived in Evansville all her life. Pat attended Armstrong Township School -- a one room schoolhouse -- from first to eighth grade and graduated from Reitz High School in 1949. Following High School, Pat enrolled in the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1952. Pat worked as a nursing practitioner and educator throughout her life, taking a significant break from her career to raise her four children. She held nursing positions at Deaconess Hospital, Boonville Convalescent Home, USI, Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, and Ivy Tech. Pat met her husband, Sam, while he was attending the University of Evansville and they married in 1955. Together, they enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, dancing, dining, family gatherings, and spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There is no doubt that they have reunited in heaven and Pat is telling Sam all about the wonderful meals he has missed since he left the earth in 2016. Throughout her life, Pat volunteered to help others. From school PTA positions and fundraisers to church socials, Pat was always willing to lend a hand. She went door-to-door collecting dimes for the March of Dimes, sewed costumes for school plays, served in numerous positions on the St. Mark’s Church Council, organized class reunions for Reitz High School and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, gave tours of the Reitz Home, visited homebound church members, led her community condominium association, and volunteered with the Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana. Her infectious laugh and funny sayings endeared her to everyone she met. Her grandchildren love repeating her expressions, “well, for heaven’s sake,” “what in the sam hell,” and “lord have mercy” in her charming Southern Indiana accent. Pat was loved dearly by her children, Karen Schmitt, Linda Morris (Don), Stan Freeman (Judy), Vicki Pugh (Tim); grandchildren, Lindsay Compitello (Tom), Carly Morris, Lacy Kittle (Pat), Nicholas Freeman, Samantha Freeman, Aline Pugh, and Grace Pugh; and seven great-grandchildren. She was especially grateful for her nieces and nephews who helped her with household maintenance in her later years. A memorial service will be scheduled later. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Reitz Home Museum, 112 Chestnut Street, Evansville, IN 47713 or www.reitzhome.com. Condolences may be made online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.
