Linda Darlene Mabrey, 79, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 2, 1940 at home on John Street in Evansville, Indiana. Linda attended Bosse High School and at 15 married Morris Ray Mabrey. They traveled to many places for his work in the Air Force. Her oldest child, Terry, was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and her youngest child, Martin, was born in Newport News, Virginia. In 1967, she married Donald Gumbel of Mt. Vernon, IN. After two years, they separated, and she settled in Evansville to raise her children with her brother, Herbert, and her mother, Ruby. In the 1970’s, Linda began working at Karges Furniture, as a Gold Leafer in the art department. She worked there until she was 70. In 1975, Linda married David Dillingham and they separated after 3 years. In 1980, she married Perry Wayne Merrill of Evansville and they separated in 1992. Linda was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an artist and a baker. Linda loved dogs. On March 5, 2020, Linda entered the Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she passed on the evening of September 15, 2020 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. Linda is preceded in her homecoming by her mother, Ruby T. Bickmeier and her father, Eben Martin; sister, Joan M. Brown; brothers, Alfred and Herbert Martin; as well as her sister’s four children, Regina, Kevin, Julie Fenwick, and Kimberly Brown. Linda leaves behind her son, Martin Mabrey, and his wife, Elizabeth Mabrey; daughter, Thresa Schmitt and her husband, Michael Schmitt; the father of her grandson’s, Shawn E. DeVoy, all of Evansville; grandson’s, Myles DeVoy of Pueblo, Colorado, Griffin DeVoy and Samuel DeVoy, of Evansville; grandson by marriage, Aaron Schmitt and his wife, Jessie; nieces, Donna Martin and her husband, David Kreuger, Beth Johns, and her husband, Matthew Johns; many grand nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Sally Callen, of Evansville. This dreadful disease caused her to slip away over the last few months and with visitation being impossible due to the Covid 19 virus, it has left a harsh toll on her loved ones.
