Leonard J. Schmitt Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Leonard J. Schmitt, 66, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2021 at his home. He was born January 12, 1955 in Evansville to the late Raymond H. and Lucy (Weinzapfel) Schmitt. Len graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1973 and ISUE in 1975 with a degree in Medical Technology. He received professional degrees in MT, Specialist in Chemistry and American Society for Clinical Pathology. Len retired from Deaconess after 41 years in 2019. He sang with Germania Mannerchor for many years and was an avid Ham Radio hobbyist and member of Tri State Amateur Radio Society. Len was a master wood worker, building a dresser for each of his 12 grandchildren. He was an avid Clabber player and an accomplished square dancer. Len was an amateur astronomer. He was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Monday Morning Men’s Study Group. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Susan (Seibert) Schmitt; children, Bernard (Micah) Schmitt and their children, Isaac, Eliana and Roman Schmitt; Matthew (Stacy) Schmitt and their children, Claire and Rachel Schmitt; Jennifer (Mark) Keller and their children, Megan, Peyton and Mason Keller; Natalie (Jeremy) Gray and their children, Abigail, Aiden and Alivia Ashby and Riley Gray; siblings, Theresa Schmitt (Fred Ott), Ralph (Carol) Schmitt, Carl Schmitt, and Agnes (Henry) Reidford; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Schmitt. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 North First Ave., Evansville, with a Memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m to 10:00 a.m on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 918 W. Mill Road, Evansville, 47710. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:00 a.m with Father Jason Gries officiating. Due to the pandemic, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.
