July 8, 1952 - February 21, 2021
Julia Ann (Ellert) Schmitt, 68, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2021, after a long, heart-breaking journey with Alzheimer’s Disease. Julie was born July 8, 1952, the third oldest in a family of seven children. Being the oldest girl, she naturally became like a second mom to her siblings. Even as an adult with a family of her own, she stayed involved with her brothers and sisters, and was always there to help celebrate life’s important milestones. After graduating from Mater Dei High School in 1970, Julie started working at James L. Will Insurance Agency, a job she held for 43 years until she retired in 2013. She cherished the strong friendships she forged within the office, and was known for always having a stash of good candy in her office drawer. On March 21, 1981, she married Edmund A. Schmitt, which was the beginning of her life as a devoted wife and mother of two children who always put her family first. Active members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Julie and Ed were married for 31 years until Ed’s death in 2012. Julie enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, needlepointing, sewing, shopping with her daughter, finding the perfect Christmas ornaments, and all things chocolate. In recent years, she treasured spending time with her family and enjoyed listening to her favorite music and spoiling her beloved dog, Sparky. She is survived by her children, E. Michael Schmitt (Elizabeth) and Laura J. Belwood (Jeremy); grandchildren, Autumn and Lucas Belwood and Sydney Schmitt; brothers, Mike Ellert (Helen), Pete Ellert and David Ellert (Janet); sisters, Sara Ellert and Mary T. Scheller (Bob); aunt and godmother, Peggy Rietman; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Paul “Mike” and Clarita Ellert, and her brother, Joe Ellert. The Schmitt family would like to thank the staff at Walnut Creek Special Care Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for all the wonderful care and comfort they provided to Julie. Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel. Private funeral services will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 701 N. Weinbach Avenue #510, Evansville, IN 47711, to advance Alzheimer’s research. Condolences may be made online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.
