Jo Anne Schmitt, 85, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at her home. She was born 85 years earlier to the day, on December 15, 1936 in Evansville to the late Guy and Irene (Brockmole) Gore. Jo was a devout Roman Catholic all her life. She was a graduate of Memorial High School class of 1954. In college (University of Tulsa and Elmhurst College), Jo was active in photography and theater. She held many paid and unpaid work and volunteer roles across her remarkable earthly life. In her young years, she babysat for her many nieces and nephews. Beginning in 6th grade, Jo handwrote address labels for the Luhring News Corp. She worked as a tax consultant, typist, and salesclerk at Griffiths Bookkeeping in high school. After college, she was employed at the Evansville State Hospital as a stenographer and activity therapist and worked at the Evansville Parks and Rec Commission. She was the director of the Senior Center, activity therapist for the Evansville Rehab Center, and became a tri-state nursing home consultant. In 1964, she was instrumental in the fight to save from destruction the Evansville train station pillars now located at the Evansville River Front Four Freedoms Monument. Jo entered politics in the late 1970s and created the Posey County Road Alliance. She was the first woman elected to the Posey County Council and was eventually recognized as a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Orr in 1983 for her work to better Indiana. Jo was active with her children’s school PTA. In her middle age, Jo babysat a multitude of neighborhood children, cared for the elderly, drove a limousine, and moonlighted as a security guard. Her last paid work experience was with Research Systems Corporation. Jo loved people and collected many friends along life’s way. She enjoyed writing her life stories, script writing (wedding invitations, certificates) and composed rhymes for one and all. Later in life she began quilting (grandchildren baby quilts) and crocheting. Jo was the last of her Gore clan to pass through life’s portal. Jo is survived by her husband of 62 years, John C. Schmitt; son, John Eric (Beth) Schmitt of Mt. Vernon; daughters, Judith “Missy” (Brandon) Shumate of New Harmony, Julie (Kevin) Gersch of Chattanooga, TN, and Janice (Chris) Roeder of Evansville; grandchildren, Erin Schmitt Tuley, Brendon and Lauren Schmitt, Bailey and Joshua Shumate, Hannah, Holden and Harrison Gersch, Abigail, Lorna, Owen, and Wesley Roeder; great granddaughter, Dani Jo Tuley. Jo was extremely proud and amazed at what her children and grandchildren have accomplished and done with their lives. In addition to her parents, Jo was preceded in death by her brothers, Jim, Don, and Thom Gore; sisters, Ruth Marks and Mary Heilman. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Ziemer Funeral Home Central Chapel, 626 First Ave., Evansville. A Rosary will be said at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2021 at the funeral home. A prayer service will begin at 10:45 a.m. and continue with a Latin Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 704 N. First Ave. with Father Ryan Hilderbrand officiating.
