Herman James "Jim" Schapker

September 17, 1936 - April 20, 2022

Herman James “Jim” Schapker, 85, of Evansville, passed away Monday, April 20, 2022. Jim was born in Evansville, Indiana on September 17,1936 to the late John and Anna (Seib) Schapker. He was a 1954 graduate of Mater Dei High School. He worked for Whirlpool Corporation for 40 years. Jim is survived by his sister, Barbara Dassel; brothers, Jerry Schapker and Marcellus Schapker; children, Amy Seiler and Tim Schapker (Vinny Sastri); and extended family, Robynn and Monte Merkel. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren Phoebe Merkel and Aidan Merkel. Jim was preceded in death by wife of 62 years Carolyn (Schneider) Schapker; his parents, John and Anna Schapker; and his brothers, Irvin, Alfred, Sylvester, Arthur, Paul, John and Oliver. Jim was a veteran of the National Guard. He was a member of Twin Towers. He served as a volunteer at the St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and their Men’s Club. He was a supporter of Mater Dei High School. He and his wife were volunteer ushers at the Evansville Civic Theater. Jim loved his family and worked hard all his life to support them. He loved to fish. He loved gardening and every year he canned tomatoes and green beans, made jellies and gave food to the neighbors. He also loved to attend the Mater Dei High School football games with his brother Jerry, friend Tom and others. He was a talented Do-It-Yourselfer, and his grandkids always said, “If papaw can’t fix it, we’re screwed.” Jim’s grandchildren were the light of his life, and he supported them in school and all their programs and activities. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Rd. Burial will immediately follow at St Joseph Cemetery.
