January 9, 1942 - May 10, 2022
Friendly, good-humored, and always eager to spend time with friends and family, Charles “Charlie” Toon was a lifelong resident of Evansville and a familiar face at many local businesses. A salesman for most of his life, Charlie had the extraordinary gift of making people comfortable from the moment he met them. His big smile, infectious laugh, and genuine interest in others will be deeply missed. Born on January 9, 1942, Charlie was the youngest of 4 children. He attended Saint Boniface School where he served as an altar boy, and Mater Dei High School where he excelled on the “best football team ever” as a running back. Following his graduation from Evansville College with a business degree, he married his first love, Shirley Stucki, at St. Boniface in 1964. Charlie was a devoted dad to his two children and often took time during the week to pick them up from school for a treat at the Dairy Queen or the Donut Bank. In the summertime, Charlie loved playing softball for Deig Brothers Construction, and spending time outdoors at Burdette Pool, golfing, or cycling along the Ohio River. He married his second wife, Lois Felsted, in 1983. Charlie spent the last two decades of his life with his companion, Mary Zvara. They were active members at the Germania Maennerchor, where Charlie enjoyed volunteering at the Fall Festival and the Volkfest. In retirement, Charlie kept busy working for Paul’s Pharmacy and Evansville Living—making deliveries around town and keeping up with his many friends and acquaintances. Charlie was also a longtime member at Riverbend Association. An avid reader and music lover, he often walked to the library on Franklin Street to pick up the latest releases or old favorites. Though Saint Boniface was his home parish, he also frequently attended Mass at Saint Benedict Cathedral. Charlie passed away peacefully at Newburgh Healthcare on May 10, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father, Cornelius Toon; his mother, Mary Lola (Sanderson) Samples and stepfather, Leroy Samples; his brother, John Toon; and sisters, Margie Butterfield and Betty Clark. He is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Suzanne) Toon and Deborah (Roc) Roney, and 6 grandchildren: Logan, Austin, and Scarlett Toon, and Isabel, Lola, and Stella Roney; and sister-in-law, Jobbie Toon. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N. First Avenue. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at St. Boniface Church, 418 N. Wabash Avenue, Evansville, IN 47712. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church with Father Godfrey Mullen, OSB officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Germania Maennerchor, 916 N. Fulton Avenue, Evansville, IN 47710. Condolences may be made online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.
