|James L. Geiss, 80, of Evansville passed away Tuesday May 7, 2013 at his home.
On April 2, 1933 he thrilled Otilda Gunselman Geiss and Carl L.V. Geiss by entering this world as a healthy, handsome baby boy. It was Palm Sunday, 1933. Jim grew up in Newburgh, later moving to Evansville and graduating from Memorial High School in 1951.
Majoring in Pharmacy at Purdue University he graduated in 1957. During the years 1954-56 he interrupted his studies to serve in the Army Mash Unit at Fort Devens, MA, finishing his last service time at Ft. Knox, KY before returning to college. On June 22, 1957, he married Rosemary Tisserand in a High Mass at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Evansville, IN. Working diligently in his profession as a pharmacist for fifty years before retiring in 2008.
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rosemary Geiss; children, Gregory James Geiss (Peggy), Joseph Nicholas Geiss (Michele Rainwater), Gloria Cecelia Collins (Terry) all of Evansville, and Fredric Jerome Geiss (Elizabeth) of Carmel , IN; grandchildren, Jenna Lee Geiss, Grant Cameron Geiss, Craig Joseph Geiss, Steven Lewis Geiss, Ryan Jacob Collins, Brett Tyler Collins, goddaughter, Haley Kathleen Geiss and Lindsey Noelle Geiss and faithful dog, Sir Brady.
One of his most favorite people was his Aunt Helen Yeaton of Pasadena, CA. He admired and appreciated the love and concern she had for him and was able to visit her in the 1980's, 90's and a couple of years ago in the new century. She has been here to spend time with him also. Jim was grateful for all the efforts she made to make his life easier when his father left.
In 1975, he began his world travel adventures. He was invited by Jim and Sharon Loehr to travel with them through Motorcraft Company, traveling to Mexico, St. Maarten, Jamaica, Spain, Bermuda and Hawaii. With Joe and Fred attending college in England, his first trip there was in 1985 to visit Fred, making the second trip there in 1990 to attend the International Stamp Show. Acquiring many fascinating friendships with the English people. He also traveled with Fr. Steve Lintzenich's group at St. Mary's Catholic Church to Italy and Ireland. In 2000 he made his third trip to England for the Stamp Show and to visit with friends who then came back here to visit the Geiss family in 2002. In 1987 he and Rosemary purchased property on Paradise Island, Bahamas and have visited there every year, taking family and friends with them.
In June of 2007, he and the love of his life, Rosemary, were remarried at St. Mary's Catholic Church by Fr. Steven Lintzenich, with a Grand 50th anniversary reception given by their children and grandchildren at Christ the King Hall.
Jim served as President and Vice-President of the Evansville Stamp Club and President of Southwestern Indiana Pharmaceutical Association. He served on the Parish Council of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active in the Disciple Group. He and Rosemary co-chaired the Annual Haiti Rummage Sale, benefiting the poor locally as well as the Haitians. At St. Mary's he received the Rager Award, Special Service Award and the coveted Bruté Society Award. Jim was an Oblate of St. Meinrad, St. Benedict's Chapter. For several years, Jim belonged to an Interdenominational Couples Bible Study Group. He was a member of the Evansville Stamp Club, the Owensboro Stamp Club, the Twin Bridges Postcard Club, the Hallmark Collector's Club and the Kennel Club.
In the past several years he and Rosemary have been involved in the antique business, dealing with postcards, stamps, magazines, silver, china, glassware, etc.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 8:00 pm Friday May 10, 2013 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714 with a prayer service at 5:00 pm. Visitation will continue from 9:00 - 10:00 am Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church 613 Cherry St., Evansville, IN 47713.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Saturday May 11, 2013 at the church with Fr. Steven Lintzenich officiating.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
